Avoiding HST with Early Membership
If you would like to take advantage of the Early Bird membership offer, you may download a membership application from the website at

Apply before April 30, 2010 to avoid the HST.

That means that, should next year's Board decide to increase rates, you will avoid that increase by having paid before April 30. You will also pay only the 5% GST instead of the 13% HST.

Why the April 30 deadline when the HST does not come into effect until July 1? The government's Transition Rules state that fees collected between May 1 and July 1 will be subject to the HST for that portion of the membership that falls after July 1, 2010. In our case that is the entire fee.

Note that this offer extends to everyone, including new club members. A new club member is someone who has never been a member of Sun Parlour Curling Club. A returning member is someone who was a member in the past, has been away for three or more years, and is renewing his/her membership.

Rock and Curl - Huge Success
The Feb 27 Rock and Curl was a huge success.  Over 80 people showed up to the event.  With so many people we had to have 2 draws and the majority played 2 four end games.

Lots of fun!

Breaking News!
Breaking News: At a press conference at the WFCU Centre this morning (February 9th), it was announced that Windsor will be hosting the Grey Power Grand Slam of Curling event on November 3 to 7 of this year. This promisses to be a big event for the local communities and for local curling in particular.

Ticket go on sale today. Don't buy them just yet. Our club has been offered the opportunity to sell tickets as a club fund raiser. We are in the process of setting this up now. You will be contacted soon with information on how to buy tickets and benefit the club in the process.

Also, I would like to thank everyone involved in this past Saturday's New-Meets-Old bonspiel. It was a huge success with everyone having a great time. More details to follow.

Finally, I am looking for a few helpers for Sunday evening, February 14. A church youth group from Essex is coming to the club for a curling experience. There will be about 30 students who will need basic instruction. They will arrive at 8:30 pm and stay until 11:00. If you are able to help, please contact me as soon as possible.

Curling Club Reminders
The club is running a bonspiel on Saturday, February 6, that is designed to give new club members an opportunity to curl in a bonspiel. We would like to see as many new members participate as possible. We also want our experienced curlers to play so that the new curlers can meet the experienced players, hence the name "New Meets Old Bonspiel."

If you want to play, all you have to do is sign up at the club. The committee will make up the teams, with at least two new members per team. We want the day to be a fun one.

Let's get together for a day of fun and curling. $20 per person includes snacks, lunch, and prizes.

The club is hosting its annual Mixed Bonspiel this weekend, January 16-17. We are still looking for teams. If you would like to play, call Janan and Kevin Alles at 733-2187 or LouAnn and Rob Bigley at 326-1508.

Want practice time? There are a couple of ways to arrange practice time. You can book time after Junior Curling on Sundays. Sparky Belanger has offered to give instruction to new curlers between 3:30 and 5:00 pm. Call him in advance at
519-735-2488 to book the time.

The club will be open from 9:00 to 12:00 on some Saturdays, when we do not have events already planned. There is no instruction offered at this time and you will need a key to get in. Keys are available from Lionel Aasen for $2.50.
Available dates: January 23, February 27, March 6, and March 20.

If you have any questions about these items, you may contact me at 326-1495 or 984-8918.

Junior's in Kingsville Bonspiel
Results of Jan 9-10 Bantam boys spiel in Kingsville were very encouraging. Both teams had a game Friday nite.

The team of Brandon Counsell ( skip ), Duncan Morden ( third ), Tim Bradley ( second ) and Logan Terron ( lead )  almost made it to a third game when they tied things up in the 7th end of their second match against the top Kingsville rink.Unfortunately they came up a bit short in the 8th end and shook hands with pride! Result was 2 losses, but lots of fun and smiles.

Our other team of first timers was skipped by Darren Taylor. Derrick Moyes was third, Jett Brookes played second and Ryan Terron was lead. This team drew a tough first draw against the top bantam team in Ontario. They managed to win an important end in the 5th and kept the other team to 1 point the rest of the way, even though they were clearly outmatched. All of them had huge smiles on their faces at the end of the day.Their results were also encouraging even though they went 0-2 as well.

Lots of important lessons were learned by all, including myself as coach.
With a special thanks to associate coach Blake Morden, Don and Judy Chalcraft and all of the parents / friends / family that showed up to witness what I believe is a new group of lifetime curlers for our club that are truly in love with the game and we only have benefits to gain by nurturing this and  future groups.

Thanks to the board for your continuing support. Hopefully these results keep you abreast of what our Junior program is accomplishing.

Happy New Year!
Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  It will be nice to see everyone again after the holiday break.

Leagues for the first half are wrapping up and playoffs will be taking place.  Have a look at the schedules at the club for more details.

With these leagues wrapping up we will be starting our second half.  New curlers are always welcome.

Also, the December newsletter is now available in the newsletter section if you missed it.

You may place orders with him and they will be delivered to Joe Drummond.
For the most part, the leagues are now ready to go and the teams are set. There might still be a little juggling around but that should be taken care of soon. If you do not know who your skip is, please contact the convener for your league.

            Little Rockers and Junior Curling

Curling starts Sunday November 1 at 1:00 pm for Little Rockers ($20.00 per year) and Junior Curlers ($60.00 per year).
Bring the kids out. They will have a great time and they will help to keep curling strong in our area.

            Sparing for 1-League Members

Anyone who has signed up as a 1-league member is allowed to spare in leagues other than their own but at a cost of $10.00 per game. Pay this fee to the skip of the team for which you are sparing. The skips will submit the money at the bar.

1-League players who have a bye-night in their league may spare within their league at no extra cost.

The above pertains only to 1-League players. A list of these club members will be posted and will be supplied to all of the skips. New members and second year members have full-memberships and can spare in any league at no cost.

Remember that the 1-League membership is experimental this year. In order for it to continue into the future, it must work well this year. We are trusting that everyone will abide by the rules for 1-day members.

Thanks you for your cooperation in this regard.

We are off to a great start. Good curling.

Originally the price was quoted at $3.00 but they are now selling for $1.00. The material is less expensive than I originally thought.

If you have already ordered a name tag, it is available to be picked up at the bar.
Fall Swing And Sweep

Once again, the Swing ‘n Sweep was a great success. Everyone had a lot of fun, both on the ice and one the course. It was made even better by the terrific weather that we had Sunday afternoon.

Thanks to Carol and Wayne Quinn and Joan and Ron Kettle for putting together such a great day. Thanks to Judy Chalcraft and Elsie Aasen for lunch and supper. The Octoberfest meal was outstanding.

Congratulations to Wayne Quinn for his 50/50 win and for his team’s overall victory.

2. An application form for the 2009 / 2010 season

3. The bonspiel poster for our 50th Anniversary Bonspiel (Oct. 22 to 25, 2009)
