2009 / 2010 Curling Calender
Membership Offer Review Survey
The Issue
Last year, the Board of Directors of the Sun Parlour Curling Club voted to offer a 1-Day membership starting for the 2009-2010 season. The fee for this membership would be $100 less than a full membership. At the Annual General Meeting held on June 6, some opposition to this change was voiced. It was suggested that the Board survey the membership to determine their feelings on the issue.
Rationale for the change
With the club’s membership reduced by 20 last year, it was necessary to develop strategies to encourage membership growth. It was felt that a 1-day membership option would encourage past members who wanted to curl only one day a week to re-join the club. It was recognized that some current members, currently paying full memberships but curling only one day would change their status to one day, thereby reducing their fees by $100.
For every current, full-fee, member who changes their membership to 1-day, the club’s income would be reduced by $100. Based on last year’s early payment fee schedule, for every returning member the club’s income would increase by $245 to $270. If one past member returned for every two current member who changed their status, the clubs club’s income would increase by $45 to $70.
The Benefits
The Board believed that, if this strategy was successful, total membership would increase as would total revenues from fees. This too would lead to increased spin-off revenues through additional bar sales, increased bonspiel participation, and a deeper pool from which to draw volunteers for activities that bring revenues into the club and help to keep fees low.
It was felt that this, in the long term, would make the club healthier. With increased membership, the club should be secure for years to come and the membership fees would be held lower than if the membership
continues to fall. Membership is of the ultimate importance to the long-term survival of the club.
The Risk
Before making a decision, the Board considered the risks. These risks were pointed out again by the membership at the AGM. If too many current members change their membership status, relative to the new members the plan attracts, the club could lose membership revenues. It was reported that a similar plan failed when it was tried by neighbouring clubs.
The monitoring of the 1-day members also adds to the responsibilities of the league conveners. They would have to ensure that no 1-day members are acting as spares on nights for which they are not members. This could be difficult, but not impossible to control. The risks are not insignificant. At the time, the Board felt that the possible benefits were worth the risk.
Options
Based on the results of this survey, the Board may choose to proceed with the plan or may decide not to implement the change. Should the new membership be implemented and it prove not to be successful, the Board can, at a later date, eliminate the 1-day membership.
Please complete the following survey to assist the Board of Directors of the Sun Parlour Curling Club to determine the likelihood of a 1-Day membership succeeding.
You may complete the survey and submit it by mail or you may complete the survey on the website at www.sunparlourcurling.com and submit it through the website. Every member is encouraged to complete the survey in order to maximize the accuracy of the data collected. If there is more than one member in your household, you my photocopy this sheet or download a copy from the website.
The survey is attached with an email address you can send it to.
All submissions must be received by July 24, 2009.

Sun Parlour Curling Representation
We are at a point in the curling season when all the major Provincial and National championships take place. I am happy to report that Sun Parlour Curling Club will be well represented.
The weekend of February 14 and 15 the Sun Parlour Curling Club team skipped by Bonnie Hyatt with team members Krista Rickeard, Janan Alles and Janice Dawson won in Regional Competition at the Ontario Curling Association Trophy event held in Grimsby, ON. They will compete for the Provincial title March 18 at the Leaside Curling Club in Toronto.
This coming weekend Lee Penfold and his team of Ron Kettle, Wayne Quinn and Bob Keene will travel to Meaford and represent our region in the Provincial finals of the Ontario Masters (65 and over) championship. This is the event Sun Parlour hosted last year so for those that came out to watch you will realize that it is very competitive.
We wish these teams well in the finals and we are very proud of their accomplishments.
A little closer to home this past week a team skipped by Brian Collins supported by Lionel Aasen, Jerry Paine and Bob Keene traveled to Wallaceburg and won the Crazy Legs Bonspiel, nice going guys.
It will only be about 6 weeks and the season will wind down so if you would like to try your hand at the grand old game now is the time, we would love to have you visit and give it a go.
